People these days are always looking for new ways to reduce the impact their actions have on the natural world, and one of the main ways they try to achieve this is through reducing their energy consumption. The reasoning behind this is that the energy you use comes primarily from non-renewable energy sources that produce pollution and damage the environment. Reducing the amount of energy you use at home therefore reduces the amount of pollution, and so prevents damage to the environment. In addition to this reducing your energy consumption is a good move economically – especially in the current economic climate – as you could save a lot on your electricity bills. Getting more energy efficient home appliances can reduce your energy consumption substantially, as will insulating your home, but one way in which energy consumption can be reduced is by replacing your existing light bulbs with more energy efficient LED bulbs.
LED bulbs are generally designed to replace the traditional halogen bulbs in your home – GU10 LED bulbs, for instance, are specifically designed to fit into certain bulb fixtures which your home is likely to already have. This makes it easier for you to switch over from incandescent bulbs to new, LED bulbs. The only major obstacle that you face in switching over is the price of the bulbs: LED bulbs tend to cost more to buy than standard bulbs, but they are well worth the cost. Where a standard, halogen bulb might use up 50 watts, the LED bulb that replaces it will only use 3 watts. In addition to this, LED bulbs last up to 5 times longer than traditional, halogen bulbs and aren’t made of fragile glass, so they require replacing a lot less often. The fact that LEDs don’t need to be replaced as often as traditional bulbs combined with their drastically reduced energy consumption means that – despite the initially higher cost – they will definitely save you money on the long term.
There are more differences between LED bulbs and halogen bulbs than just their energy efficiency, though. Light from LEDs is generally very directional, whereas halogen bulbs produce a more diffuse light. This means that LED bulbs are good to use as spotlights, but may not be ideal for lighting home interiors. LEDs produce light in a narrow bandwidth, meaning that they normally produce a single colour, unlike halogen bulbs which produce white light. There are several methods that allow LED bulbs to produce white light, but this unique property of LEDs means that it’s easy and cheap to produce coloured LED bulbs. Differences such as these can cause some concerns, but they give GU10 LED bulbs some significant advantages over halogen bulbs, especially when specialist lighting is required.
Making the change over to LED bulbs can help you reduce the damage your energy consumption can do to the environment, in addition to keeping down how much you spend on electricity. Don’t be put off by the initial cost of switching; LEDs can easily save you money in the long run. Considering their advantages, switching over to LED bulbs is well worth contemplating.
